本研究主要是以皮爾士(Charles Sanders Peirce, 1839-1914)的實用主義意義理論為研究背景，並試著將其導入視覺傳達設計(Visual Communication Design)基礎理論之應用做探討。由於皮爾士的實用主義意義理論衍生於其記號學，主旨是針對記號之意義部分作更進一步的分析與探究。由於當前記號學(Semiotics)常被設計學科應用為設計方法的基礎理論，特別是視覺傳達設計，更是測重於記號與意義的產生方式與置換原理，因此本研究將以此理論再作進一步的探討。本研究文分三部分：一、皮爾士的記號學與實用主義的發展概述。二、視覺傳達設計學科的起源、內涵與流變。三、皮爾士的實用主義意義理論在視覺傳達設計之應用探討。初步研究結果如下：首先，皮爾士的實用主義意義理論或可提供視覺傳達設計創作者在符碼、意義擷取上的參考與應用。再者，皮爾士的實用主義意義理論提供一個確認符碼意義的說明性理論，讓視覺傳達設計學程進一步的走向實務與理論並重的學科。 This purpose of this research is to discuss how the theory of Peirce's Pragmaticism (harles Sanders Peirce, 1839-1914) lied to visual communication design. The theory of Peirce's Pragmaticism was derived from his Semiotics. At present, Semiotics is applied for the basic theory of visual communication design. Therefore, it is possible to apply the theory of Pragmaticism to visual communication design. There are three parts in this research: (1) the concept of Pragmaticism. (2) the meanings and development of visual communication design. (3) how the Peirce's Pragmaticism applied to visual communication design. The result of this research: Peirce's Pragmaticism can be an explainable theory and applied for the basic of visual communication design. Besides, Peirce's Pragmaticism can be a reference for people in visual communication design to apply in choosing signs and their meanings.
