This purpose of this research is to discuss how the theory of Dewey’s empirical naturalism (John Dewey, 1859-1982) applied to visual communication design. The theory of Dewey’s empirical naturalism is not only a theory but also a method. In some ways, Pragmatism is brought up from Semiotics. However, at present, Semiotics is applied for the basic theory of visual communication design. Therefore, it is possible to apply the theory of Pragmatism to visual communication design in some basic ways. The method of Literature review and the method of Empirical naturalism were applied to obtain the necessary information. There are two parts in this research: (1) the development and concept of Pragmatism and Dewey’s empirical naturalism relations between writers and readers. The result of this research: Dewey’s empirical naturalism could be an explainable theory and applied for the basic theory of visual communication design. In addition, Dewey’s empirical naturalism could be a reference for researcher and students in Visual communication design to apply in choosing visual symbols and their meanings.
