The use of mobile telephones during driving has made researchers and authorities worry about the effect of mobile-telephone use on traffic safety. However, previous investigations of effects on semantic density during telephone conversation while driving are rare. The study was conducted in driving simulator cab in a lab. Forty five subjects with different gender and driving experience were recruited on campus. The effects of five different mobile-telephoning situations on driving performance were investigated. The results showed that semantic density of telephone conversation during driving may not affect driving performance. However, either hand-hold or hand-free mobile-telephoning impaired overall safety performance. The female subjects tended to perform less well than male subjects in driving performance. Finally, the driving strategies during different driving mental workload adopted by different driving experience subjects are also discussed.
